TITLE: Word, Cut, Print

age: 8-12 years

ACTIVITY: During this workshop children explore the basic principles of letterpress printing, graphic design and typography and discover how through tinkering and making and the use of new technologies, they can make these art forms work together to express themselves creatively in word and print. Children firstly discuss the theme set for the workshop, choose a word based on the theme and then sketch out in reverse. Next using a Sissix cutting machine, alphabet dies and craft foam, they cut out the letters of their choosen word. They then mount the letters onto a mounting board and ink up using ink rollers and coloured inks. Next using a proofing press and paper they pull a print of the word. Children have the choice to ink up each letter with a different colour ink for the first print and to experiment with colour on all subsequent prints.
